Steam
Definition
Water in its vapor phase, used as the most efficient medium for delivering large quantities of heat over long distances. It carries energy as latent heat stored in the phase rather than in temperature.
One pound of steam delivers roughly 970 BTU the instant it condenses, with no temperature drop, so pipes can be smaller and pumping energy is negligible because steam moves under its own pressure. The condensate that forms after steam gives up its energy is hot, clean, and ready to return to the boiler. Steam travels at 60 to 100 miles per hour through distribution headers.
