Definition
A pressure vessel that injects chemical energy from fuel directly into water to convert it to steam. It is one component of a larger steam circuit, not the whole system.
A boiler takes the chemical energy stored in fuel such as natural gas, oil, biomass, or electricity and drives it into water through heat-transfer tubes. Combustion gases on one side reach 1,500 degrees F or higher while water on the other side absorbs that energy and keeps the tube metal from overheating. Large industrial boilers generate tens of thousands of pounds of steam per hour through violent boiling and turbulent convection.
