Steam-Condensate Loop

Definition

The fourth link of the boiler circuit, in which steam delivers its latent heat at the point of use, condenses, and the condensate is collected and returned to the feedwater system.

Steam begins losing energy the moment it leaves the boiler, gives up its latent heat at air handlers, heat exchangers, sterilizers, and kettles, and condenses into liquid water collected by steam traps. The loop must be protected from the corrosive carbonic acid produced by the boiler’s own chemistry. Returning the condensate preserves both its heat and its purity.
