Surface Fouling on Metal Surfaces
Definition
The preferential formation and anchoring of scale on metal heat transfer surfaces.
Metal surfaces are chemically and electrically distinct from bulk water and offer imperfections, oxide films, and roughness that help particles anchor. Once a particle adheres it becomes a new nucleation site, accelerating growth. Scale concentrates on hot, high flux areas where hydration is already destabilized, making removal difficult.
