Definition

The diagnostic principle that chemical test results reveal symptoms while the circuit reveals causes. It frames boiler troubleshooting as system thinking rather than chemical adjustment.

A new technician who sees low sulfite and turns up the pump is treating a symptom, whereas the circuit asks whether the deaerator is cold, condensate return has dropped, or makeup volume rose. When scale inhibitor tests at zero, the circuit asks whether the softener is working, the brine tank is full, or hardness is leaking through a heat exchanger. Managing a boiler means managing a circuit, not managing chemicals.
