The Four Levers
Definition
The four primary conditions that govern the relative position of the carbonate equilibrium: concentration, pH, temperature, and pressure.
Each step in the carbonate chain is a negotiation rather than a fixed rung, and these four levers decide which carbon species dominate. pH is usually the most useful and dominant practical predictor, while temperature and pressure can override the system in heated or pressurized equipment. Treating speciation as a multi-variable negotiation rather than a memorized ladder is the core mental model of the chapter.
