Total Suspended Solids
Definition
A gravimetric measurement of particulate mass in water, reported in mg/L after filtering a known volume and weighing the captured solids.
A known volume (typically 1 liter) is filtered through a pre-weighed glass fiber filter, dried at 103 to 105 degrees C, and reweighed, with the mass gain reported per liter. TSS is direct but typically requires lab equipment and time. It correlates roughly with turbidity but is not directly interchangeable.
