Transformations

Definition

The reactions and phase changes inside a system boundary that convert one species or state into another.

Listed transformations include oxidation-reduction, acid-base shifts, precipitation, gas stripping, evaporation, biological growth, and inhibitor consumption. Identifying which transformations occur answers the fourth mass-balance question and points to which pillars are contributing. Examples include calcium bicarbonate becoming calcium carbonate, sulfite becoming sulfate, and soluble iron becoming insoluble iron oxide.
