Acids as corrosion accomplice
Definition
Protons intensify corrosion both by dissolving passive films to expose fresh metal and by directly accepting electrons during acid corrosion.
In indirect attack, acids dissolve passive films and expose fresh metal to oxidizers. In direct attack, protons themselves accept electrons, as in Fe plus 2 H+ giving Fe2+ plus hydrogen gas. Acids are the accomplice to the oxidizer thieves, raising corrosion risk especially at low pH.
