Passivation and circuit breaking

Definition

Passivation and protective films, coatings, or insulation break the corrosion circuit and shield metal surfaces from oxidizers.

A passive film keeps fresh metal from contacting oxidizers, but acids can dissolve that film and expose new metal. Coatings and insulation interrupt the metal path or block contact, stopping the electron-flow system. Passivating surfaces is one of the main control levers against destructive oxidation.
