pH influences corrosion because low pH accelerates proton-driven oxidation while high pH can destabilize specific alloys.
Low pH increases the supply of protons that dissolve passive films and accept electrons. High pH can destabilize amphoteric metals such as aluminum and zinc. pH also shapes the speciation of oxidizers such as hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite, changing oxidizing pressure.
