Charge Delocalization
Definition
The spreading of ionic charge across many atoms in a growing lattice, which stabilizes the solid.
As ions attach to a nucleus their charges become delocalized across the lattice so no single bond carries the full burden. This collective distribution lowers free energy and makes the solid increasingly hard to disturb. Phosphonates and polymers attack scale by disrupting exactly this charge distribution at growth sites.
