Closed Systems

Definition

Water systems not exposed to the atmosphere in the same way as open towers, including closed loops and boilers, but still not immune to solids.

Construction debris (cutting oil, metal shavings, welding slag, threading compound, flux) is the most common source if the system is not flushed before commissioning. Corrosion products are the second source, as iron oxide, copper, and zinc generate suspended particles over time. In boilers, pretreatment and blowdown are the primary defenses rather than in-loop filtration.
