Definition

Water systems exposed to the atmosphere by design, such as cooling towers, where air is drawn across fill to evaporate water and reject heat.

The air carries dust, pollen, insects, leaves, debris, and fine particulate that the tower basin collects continuously. Because the tower recirculates, particles distribute throughout fill media, piping, heat-exchange surfaces, and low-flow zones. The system becomes its own continuous source of suspended solids, so the only question is whether removal keeps pace with intake.
