Condenser approach temperature
Definition
The difference between the leaving condenser water temperature and the condenser saturated refrigerant temperature, a key indicator of condenser heat-transfer efficiency.
It is calculated as LCWT minus CSRT and reflects the lowest temperature the condenser refrigerant can reach. A clean condenser at full load typically shows a 1 to 3 degree Fahrenheit approach, and fouling widens it. As a rough rule, each 1 degree Fahrenheit rise in approach raises chiller energy use by about 1.5 to 2 percent, tying fouling directly to operating cost.
