Scale
Definition
A hard mineral deposit, primarily calcium carbonate, that forms on heat-transfer surfaces and insulates them. Even a thin layer sharply reduces boiler efficiency.
Scale rarely announces itself, instead showing up as rising approach temperatures, declining capacity, and equipment that runs worse for no obvious reason. A thin adherent film can reduce metal exposure, but a thick insulating deposit creates hot spots, concentrates chemistry, and builds occluded zones with varying oxygen availability that drive localized corrosion. Corrosion products and roughened surfaces provide nucleation sites that promote more scale, forming a feedback loop.
