Corrosion control levers

Definition

Corrosion is controlled by reducing the driving force, breaking the circuit, or redirecting the reaction to a sacrificial metal.

Reducing the driving force means lowering oxidizing power, for example by removing oxygen or reducing oxidizer residual. Breaking the circuit uses films, coatings, or insulation to interrupt the electron or ion path. Redirecting the reaction sacrifices a more easily oxidized metal so the protected metal survives.
