Filter Types and Removal Rating
Definition
The classes of mechanical filters and the smallest particle size each reliably removes, used to match the tool to the particle.
Sand or multimedia beds remove about 10 to 20 microns with low maintenance auto backwash, disk filters about 25 to 100 microns, and cartridge or bag filters 1 to 25 microns with manual changeout. Hydrocyclone separators handle only dense particles by centrifugal force and are ineffective for fine silt or biological debris. Matching removal rating to particle size distribution is the difference between effective control and wasted equipment.
