Particle Size Distribution

Definition

The spread of particle sizes and densities present in a system, which determines which removal mechanism will work.

Heavy grit settles in basins while fine silt requires filtration, so knowing the distribution tells you whether to use settling, a hydrocyclone, or media filtration. A hydrocyclone removes dense grit but not fine silt, and a sand filter captures silt but blinds on heavy debris. It is the basis for selecting filter type and removal rating.
