Heat Load
Definition
The amount of thermal energy that must be added or removed from a system, calculated for sensible heat as Q equals mass flow times specific heat times temperature change.
For latent processes it is calculated as Q equals mass times the latent heat of vaporization. Tracking heat load lets engineers size equipment correctly, troubleshoot efficiency losses, and predict water usage. Most heat transfer failures are energy accounting failures rather than control failures.
