Kinetic restraint of oxygen

Definition

Oxygen wants electrons but reacts slowly because the strong O=O bond and the activation energy barrier of its first reduction step hold it back.

It does not grab electrons with the violence of ozone or chlorine, so it often reacts more slowly than stronger applied oxidants even though the final products are energetically favorable. Under ambient conditions it is usually too slow to dismantle most biological structures on contact, which is why it is not a fast disinfectant. Its importance comes from ubiquity and replenishment rather than speed.
