Neutralizing Amines

Definition

Volatile organic compounds added to feedwater or steam that travel with the steam, condense with the condensate, and hydrolyze to hydroxide ions that raise pH and neutralize carbonic acid.

Because different amines have different volatilities, some condense quickly and protect early portions of the system while others travel farther to protect distant runs. A campus with miles of steam tunnels typically needs a blend of amines with varying volatilities to ensure adequate pH protection throughout. They are the most common treatment for low-pH condensate.
