Nitrite

Definition

Nitrite is the classic anodic inhibitor, promoting a stable iron oxide film that suppresses anodic dissolution in closed systems. It provides excellent corrosion protection with minimal scaling when kept within limits.

Nitrite enforces passivation by immobilizing the surface lattice, resisting further oxidation as long as concentration and pH are maintained. Its danger is shared by all anodic inhibitors: if levels fall too low, partial coverage leaves intense anodes surrounded by protected cathodes, causing rapid localized attack. It works best where chemistry is stable and the system stays within narrow limits.
