Anodic Protection

Definition

Anodic protection prevents metal atoms from leaving the lattice by strengthening or enforcing passive films at the anode. It makes electron loss energetically unfavorable and suppresses dissolution at its source.

Anodic inhibitors lock metal atoms in place, with nitrite as the classic example, promoting a stable iron oxide film that suppresses anodic dissolution in closed systems when concentration and pH are maintained. The danger is that partial coverage concentrates corrosion: if inhibitor levels fall too low, unprotected sites become intense anodes surrounded by protected cathodic surfaces, causing rapid localized attack. Anodic control works best where chemistry is stable, monitoring is reliable, and the system can be kept within narrow limits.
