Reduction
Definition
Reduction is the gain of electrons by a chemical species, the counterpart to oxidation.
The species that gains electrons is reduced and acts as the oxidizing agent. In corrosion, the cathode is where an oxidizing species such as oxygen or chlorine accepts electrons and is reduced. Reduction and oxidation are coupled, so electrons removed from one species are always taken up by another.
