Redox reaction
Definition
A redox reaction is a coupled pair in which one species loses electrons (oxidation) and another gains them (reduction).
Electrons do not vanish; they move from a donor to an acceptor. The driving force comes from the difference in how strongly each species wants electrons. Sodium giving up an electron to chlorine to form sodium chloride is the cleanest example.
