Standard reduction potential
Definition
Standard reduction potential is the measure of how strongly a species drives to gain electrons, expressed in volts, and it ranks oxidizing strength.
Higher potential means a more aggressive oxidizer toward both biological life and metallurgy. Approximate values are ozone about 2.07 V, hydrogen peroxide about 1.76 V, free chlorine and hypochlorous acid about 1.36 V, and dissolved oxygen about 1.23 V. These values are highly system and condition dependent.
