Ryznar Stability Index
Definition
The Ryznar Stability Index, like the LSI, evaluates a water’s thermodynamic tendency to precipitate or dissolve calcium carbonate under bulk conditions. It helps judge whether a protective carbonate layer can form.
RSI describes the opportunity for calcium carbonate to raise cathodic resistance but does not predict corrosion rate. Surface-level conditions including oxygen, flow, deposits, aggressive anions, and microbiology determine the actual corrosion speed. It is paired with the LSI when assessing the potential for the fugitive calcium carbonate defense.
