Saturation pH
Definition
The theoretical pH at which calcium and carbonate are in balance between dissolution and precipitation of calcium carbonate.
pHs is computed as 9.3 plus factors A and B minus factors C and D, where the factors come from total dissolved solids, temperature, calcium hardness, and total alkalinity. It is the reference point against which actual pH is compared in the Langelier, Ryznar, and Puckorius indices. Comparing measured pH to pHs reveals whether the water is biased toward scaling or dissolving calcium carbonate.
