Settling

Definition

The gravity-driven deposition of particles when flow velocity drops below their settling velocity.

Heavy particles such as sand, grit, and rust settle naturally in basins, while light particles like biological debris and fine silt remain suspended at typical cooling flow conditions. Basin design (deep sumps, sloped floors, well-placed suction points) keeps settled solids away from pump intakes. Light particles that will not settle require mechanical filtration.
