Water efficiency versus chemical risk
Definition
The fundamental tradeoff of cooling tower management between saving water by raising cycles and the rising scaling, corrosion, and fouling risk that higher concentration brings.
Higher cycles reduce blowdown and conserve water, but each cycle multiplies calcium, alkalinity, silica, sulfate, and chloride, worsening scaling indices and increasing inhibitor demand. The water treater must balance maximizing cycles against protecting surfaces. The chapter frames protecting water and managing chemistry as the same job.
