Definition
The amount of acid or neutralizing chemical a water requires, driven by its alkalinity and the position of the carbonate equilibrium.
Carbonate chemistry is a hidden driver of acid demand alongside pH stability, scaling, and corrosion. High alkalinity means high chemical demand, whether the response is acid feed in cooling towers, amines downstream of boilers, or alkalinity removal upstream. Understanding the carbonate equilibrium lets a consultant predict and budget this demand rather than react to it.
