Definition

The self-reinforcing cycle in which suspended solids enable and intensify corrosion, biology, and scale simultaneously rather than causing any of them alone.

Deposits create oxygen differentials that drive corrosion, corrosion produces more solids, more solids make more deposits, deposits shelter biology, biofilms trap more solids, and trapped solids seed scale. Each step degrades heat transfer and intensifies local surface conditions. Solids are not the disease but the condition that lets every disease take hold.
