Heterogeneous Nucleation
Definition
Crystal formation that begins on an existing foreign surface rather than spontaneously in bulk solution, lowering the kinetic barrier to forming a new solid.
A deposit surface (silt, corrosion product, biological debris) offers irregularities, charge distributions, and energy states that serve as a shortcut for a thermodynamically ready but kinetically limited ion pair. It bypasses the energetic penalty of forming a fresh solid-liquid interface from scratch. This makes scale easier, faster, and more likely, especially in high heat flux zones with elevated surface supersaturation.
