Deaeration
Definition
The mechanical removal of dissolved gases from feedwater by heating it to the boiling point with live steam. It is the primary defense against oxygen corrosion.
By scrubbing water with steam, breaking surface tension, and maximizing contact area between water and heat, deaeration drives dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other noncondensable gases out of solution to be vented. A properly operating system delivers feedwater below about 10 ppb dissolved oxygen, a reduction of about 99.9 percent from the roughly 8 ppm in cold makeup. Mechanical deaeration does the heavy lifting that chemistry cannot replace.
