Gibbs Free Energy in Scaling

Definition

The thermodynamic quantity whose minimization determines whether dissolved ions or a solid lattice is the preferred state.

Scale becomes favorable when the dispersed hydrated state is no longer the lowest energy arrangement available to the system. Below that point water can still pay the cost of keeping ions separated; above it the lattice becomes the cheaper outcome. Gibbs free energy determines the preferred destination while kinetics determines how fast the system reaches it.
