Kinetics versus Thermodynamics
Definition
The principle that thermodynamics sets the direction of scale formation while kinetics sets the pace at which it actually happens.
Gibbs free energy determines the preferred destination, but kinetics, through residence time, surfaces, turbulence, and inhibitors, determines whether thermodynamic pressure becomes a deposit. Inhibitors do not change the thermodynamic verdict; they slow the kinetic outcome. The greater the supersaturation and driving force, the more work kinetic control must do.
