Supersaturation
Definition
A condition in which dissolved ions exceed their equilibrium solubility and are thermodynamically ready to crystallize but may remain in solution due to kinetic limits.
In a supersaturated solution thermodynamics has granted permission to crystallize, yet the solution can remain clear because the kinetic conditions for bulk precipitation are not met. Bulk precipitation requires ions to collide with complementary partners, in a lattice consistent orientation, and to stay associated long enough for others to join. Supersaturation marks the boundary between permission and action, with action being a matter of kinetics.
