Metastable State

Definition

A condition in which a system sits beyond equilibrium yet remains kinetically trapped, as in clear supersaturated water before precipitation.

A supersaturated solution is metastable because precipitation is thermodynamically favored but no stable solid has formed. The system can remain clear until the kinetic conditions for nucleation are met. Engineered water systems deliberately operate in this metastable regime, slowing the emergence of order long enough to move heat.
