Scale Inhibitors
Definition
Treatment chemistries that slow the kinetics of scale formation without removing the thermodynamic drive to form scale.
They delay nucleation, distort crystal growth, and keep particles dispersed long enough for removal through blowdown or filtration. They let engineered systems operate safely in conditions that would otherwise scale rapidly, but they buy time rather than immunity. The more thermodynamic pressure the chemistry applies, the more work inhibitors must do.
