Definition
A description of how the Hydrogen-Bond Network flexes to absorb added heat as stored potential energy and releases it on cooling, dampening temperature swings.
As heat is absorbed the network flexes and slows the rise in temperature, and as water cools the network relaxes and releases stored potential energy, slowing the rate of cooling. This self regulation lets water resist rapid temperature changes that push other substances to their breaking point. The limit of this storage is the boiling point, where the network is maxed out with bonds stretched and motion intense.
