Anode

Definition

The anode is the site of oxidation in the corrosion cell, where metal atoms lose electrons and enter solution as ions. It is the lower-reduction-potential location where metal is lost.

At the anode reactions such as Fe to Fe2+ plus 2e- and Cu to Cu2+ plus 2e- eject neutral atoms from the lattice as charged ions that dissolve into the water. Attack generally begins at minor surface defects such as grain boundaries, inclusions, or scratches, so metal departs atom by atom wherever departure is easiest rather than thinning evenly. This is where pits begin.
