Corrosion Cell
Definition
The corrosion cell is the complete electrochemical circuit, described as nature’s entropic battery, that allows a corrosion current to flow. It requires an anode, a cathode, an electrolyte, and a metallic path.
It begins with a thermodynamic energy mismatch between the high-energy metal lattice and a strong electron sink such as oxygen, which creates voltage. When that voltage is paired with continuous paths for both electrons and ions, a closed circuit forms and corrosion becomes an electrical current flowing through the metal. Remove any one of the four components and the circuit breaks; leave all four intact and a corrosion current can flow.
