Concentration as Scale Driver
Definition
The steady rise in dissolved ion concentration as water is removed, making it the dominant driver of scale formation.
Unlike temperature and pH, which fluctuate or can be adjusted, concentration accumulates because evaporation removes pure water and leaves minerals behind. As ions crowd closer together their activities rise and the free energy of remaining dispersed rises with them. At some point the dissolved state is no longer the lower Gibbs arrangement, which is the core reason scale forms in industrial systems.
